Improving Feedback with three simple steps: Introducing the Action Feedback Protocol Online

09.30-10.30 UK | 13.30-14.30 Dubai | 17.30-18.30 Malaysia

This session will introduce the Action Feedback Protocol, a new approach to providing feedback on students’ work. This approach is designed to streamline the feedback process and enhance student engagement with feedback. It consists of three simple steps:

  1. ‘Tune the ear’: Provide students with resources that will help them understand the value of feedback, and how they can use it to improve
  2.  ‘Simplify the message’: When giving feedback to students, focus on concise, clear comments under three headings
    • Motivational: What was done well in this piece of work?
    • Informational: How could the work have been better?
    • Feed-Forward: What should the student work on in order to improve?
  3. ‘Encourage action’: Help students to directly act on their feedback, by keeping a record of the feedback, reflecting on what it says, and creating an action plan

This approach has been used successfully in a range of courses and programmes across Heriot-Watt. It is now being promoted across the university. A range of resources, templates and case studies are available on the Curriculum & Assessment Design Toolkit.
