Sandpit for Research Ideas F2F In-Person
This 2-hour, in-person sandpit-style brainstorming session, facilitated by members of Heriot-Watt’s Research Engagement and Development (RED) team, offers a unique opportunity to explore, develop, and shape innovative research ideas in a creative and supportive environment.
Taking place in the final week of the Edinburgh Writing Retreat, the session is designed to help participants reflect on their emerging writing projects and connect them to potential future research pathways, funding opportunities, and collaborations.
This workshop is open to retreat participants and up to 10 academic staff with research duty. It will not be streamed or recorded, to allow for open, idea-focused discussion.
Aim:
To support academics in generating and refining research ideas through structured brainstorming and peer engagement, fostering future research planning and collaboration.
Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Use creative thinking techniques to develop research questions or project ideas
- Identify opportunities for research collaboration or interdisciplinary exploration
- Connect emerging writing outputs to potential funding or impact pathways
- Gain feedback and encouragement from peers and RED facilitators
- Build confidence in progressing early-stage research concepts

Cancellations
All cancellations need to be made on LibCal, no later than 48hrs before each session starts. This will allow a person on the waiting list to attend.
Non-attendance
If you frequently cancel with short notice (less than 48 hours) or fail to show-up, this will be considered as non-attendance. If you miss 5 sessions in the same academic year, we will reach out to you to check in on your wellbeing and notify that you will not be able to book any further places until the end of academic year, unless a valid reason is given. Existing bookings will also be cancelled.
