Demystifying Criticality: Writing with Depth and Purpose in Doctoral Research WEBINAR Online

Criticality is the backbone of doctoral research, yet its precise meaning and manifestation in academic writing often remain elusive to early-stage researchers. This workshop aims to demystify criticality by exploring how it functions as a hallmark of academic sophistication and intellectual depth. Far from simply criticising or finding fault, being critical requires a nuanced understanding of your topic—a deep engagement with ideas that demonstrates expertise without imposing rigid judgments. Criticality in writing should feel like a conversation between you, the literature, and the methodological choices, where your voice speaks with confidence, curiosity and clarity.
The session will highlight two key areas in doctoral theses where criticality often proves pivotal: literature reviews and philosophical discussions in methodology. These sections demand more than a simple summary or description; they require a synthesis of ideas, critical interrogation of sources and a reflection on underlying assumptions. Through practical activities, participants will learn how to navigate these challenges and cultivate a critical mindset that enriches their research and strengthens their academic voice.
