A smooth transition is crucial for student success and retention at university. However, entering tertiary study is often complex and challenging for many students, who increasingly must balance academic demands with work, household, and family responsibilities. Despite diverse backgrounds, most students arrive at university with education experiences shaped by the heavily structured, teacher-directed, face-to-face learning environment of secondary schooling, which often leaves them unprepared for the demands of independent, self-managed study in a blended learning environment.

In this paper, Dr Sarah List, a Programme Director and Senior Lecturer in Biosciences and the UniSA Executive representative for the Higher Education Research Group of Adelaide for more than decade,  reports on a novel pre-commencement university experience that replicates an authentic experience of a fortnight of student life in a health-related program at an Australian university. The program delivered basic scientific concepts, whilst introducing students to modern blended learning (recorded lectures, live online lectorials and in-person workshops). The program also included guided opportunities to reflect on their learning, time management and study skills. The final component introduced academic support staff and resources, and gave opportunities to network with peers and faculty members to foster those critical social and academic connections.
